Narrative: Please join Joe Howell and me for a paddle on Sauvie Island's interior waterways that meander thru its northern ODFW Wildlife Area. This island is so big it has its own river, is located in 2 Oregon counties, stretches over 16 miles from tip to tip and has lakes in the island that has more islands in those lakes.

Our plan is to launch on Little McNary Lake, head towards Big McNary lake, pass thru some picturesque sloughs to finally emerge onto Lake Sturgeon located in the center of the island. From there we'll make our way to the Gilbert River which will take us back to our launch area on the Multnomah Channel. This paddle is essentially a one-way trip for 8-10 miles. No shuttle required. There are numerous opportunities for takeouts during the day.

We may see young eagles, mature ones and other waterfowl in this wildlife area. It is unlikely we'll encounter many motor boats. Much of our paddle is in areas where motor boats are prohibited. There is a small portage (25 yards or so) in which we'll help each other move boats from Aaron's Lake to Pete's Slough.

We'll meet at the Cracker Barrel Grocery Store at 9:00 am located just after you exit the bridge onto the island. Parking on the island is $10 and you can purchase your day pass at the store. We will caravan from the store to the Gilbert River Boat Ramp. There are restrooms at the put-in, but not of the highest standards as I recall from past experience. However, it is early in the season and conditions may not have substantially deteriorated yet.
